Beyond the Lobby: Lars Pedersen - Hotel Ändra Seattle

1. Lars, you’ve been GM at Hotel Andra for an impressive 21 years. Congratulations! How has the hotel and guest expectations changed over the last two decades?

I've seen a remarkable evolution in both the hospitality landscape and our guests' expectations. In the early days, the emphasis was on delivering traditional, heartfelt hospitality. Guests cherished the simplicity of genuine human connections.

Today, technology and the environment play a more impactful role. Guests seek not only comfort but also seamless digital experiences and eco-friendly initiatives, challenging us to adapt while staying true to the core values that have defined Hotel Ändra's charm over the years. The journey has been a fascinating blend of tradition and innovation, and I'm excited about the continued evolution of the guest experience.

2.  Looking ahead at the future, what do you predict to be the biggest trend in hospitality for 2024?

I believe that personalized experiences and sustainability will continue to lead the way in 2024. We need to embrace technology to enhance the guest experience, while prioritizing eco-friendly practices to align with the evolving preferences of conscious travelers.

3.  As the GM, how do you balance the operational aspects of running a hotel with the strategic vision for its success?

Balancing the two is an art. A strategic vision for success involves a relentless focus on guest satisfaction. Monitoring guest feedback allows for continuous improvement to exceed guest expectations. My approach is to streamline the operation for day-to-day efficiency, while never losing sight of the overall vision. I like to align my team with the larger goals and empower them to contribute to the success story.

4. Hotel Ändra is renowned for its pet-friendly atmosphere. Can you elaborate on the special amenities or thoughtful touches you provide for guests who choose to bring their four-legged companions along for their stay?

We understand that pets are cherished members of many families. Our commitment to providing a warm welcome extends to our four-legged guests, and we go the extra mile to ensure their stay is as enjoyable as possible. We provide dogs with a cozy dog blanket, bowl, and mat upon arrival, along with a map of local dog parks and pet-friendly restaurants at no additional charge.

5.  What advice would you give to individuals aspiring to pursue a career in hospitality?

I advise young people to embark on their hospitality journey with a genuine passion for service. Cultivate resilience, adaptability, and a keen understanding of diverse cultures. Get hands-on experience in various departments within a hotel to broaden skills. Take every opportunity to learn and connect. Building genuine connections is the heart of hospitality.
